La Jolla

La Jolla (pronounced la hoy-a) is a hilly seaside community within the northern city limits of San Diego. It is 7 miles of curving coastline along the Pacific Ocean.
In 2008 and 2009 La Jolla had the highest priced homes in the nation. The average price of a four-bedroom home was reported as $1.842 milion in '08 and $ 2.125 milliom in '09. I dont think we will be choosing to settle down here.

Early Native Americans, the Kumeyaay, called this location "land of holes". It is uncertain why, but it could be the sea -level caves on the bluffs. Later, Spanish occupiers, referred to the area as La Joya meaning "the jewel".

This is Bird Rock. It is home to many birds and visited often by birders and visitors.

California ground squirrels live in burrows which they excavate themselves. Some burrows are a community, but each squirrel has its own entrance. According to locals, very few people observe the signs like the one in the picture above. These ground squirrels are very tame and take the food right out of your hand.  The burrow openings are about 4 inches in diameter and 5 to 30 feet in lenght and 2 to 4 feet below the soil surface. Burrowing can be quite destructive.
This squirrel is begging for food. He was not to fond of my camera in his face...and quickly scampered home.
There are lots of spots for viewing and picnicing and paths for walking and jogging along the coast in La Jolla. The village streets are lined with palm trees. Kayaking, snorkeling, and biking offer ways to discover and explore the cliffs, caves, and marine life.

Mexican is always a first choice for us when looking for lunch. Alfonso's came highly recommended by locals. It is a family-owned (for 32 years) and operated restaurant located on Prospect Street.

I had a frozen strawberry drink and we both enjoyed a yummy burrito...fried cod, shredded cabbage, salsa, and mild white sauce .

After lunch, we headed home.
We took I-5 right through the heart of San Diego. Lots of traffic...there always is...in front, behind, beside, and over us! Not my favorite kind of bike ride, but it got us home lots quicker!

It was a fun day!

We have 2 new members this week! And over 5,000 page views!  Pretty amazing to us!  Thanks again for visiting...and keep the good times rollin!

  2. We really enjoyed that area when we stayed in Santee. We decided to ride our bikes from Mission Beach in search of the Children's Pool. Oh, there are a lot of up hills in that area!!! But we finally found it. We were there before the rope went up.

Beautiful photos! I always enjoy seeing the water.

  3. It is beautiful, but no way would I pay that much for a house there.
If I had that kind of money I would want a house in the mountains of Colorado, or Montana. I love the trees more than the ocean but that is just me. Pretty pictures.

  4. It has been several years since I have visited La Jolla, but it sure stood out as one of the prettiest places in California. I loved the beach and all the flowers everywhere. Thanks for reminding me of its beauty. Too bad it is such an expensive place to live.
