Mystery Hummingbird ?

Joe and I both woke up today with sore throats so a hike we had planned was postponed...maybe tomorrow? So instead, we decided to take a ride out to Madera Canyon. Its about a 45 minute ride (from Tucson) down I 19 south towards Nogales. We took exit 63 and followed the brown signs.

We did park at the visitor center and took the 1.7 mile nature walk.

This is the mystery hummingbird...I have looked and looked.

The common spring hummingbirds for the area are Broad-billed, Magnificent, Anna's and Broad-tailed. I studied all of them and couldn't make a match.

Any suggestions?

After our walk, we continued in Pearl to the end of the road...about 2 miles. There are several hikes we are interested in so the plan is a return trip.

Our pups were glad to see us...

Happy Friday! Until next time, take care and...

enjoy!

Hello Spring!

Spring doesn't officially begin until tomorrow, but don't tell the birds and wildflowers.

We took a four mile hike mid-morning in the Sabino Canyon Recreational Area...this time on the Bear Canyon trail.

Desert Chicory

I actually think the under side of the desert chicory is quite pretty too.

We enjoyed this pair of black-throated Sparrows for awhile.

We didn't see their nest, but he was sure busy!

These are tiny little hedgehog cactus...called strawberry hedgehog. They only grow to about 3.5 inches tall.

The saguaro buds we saw just the other day are about ready to burst open.

But, this was the highlight of the morning...this pair of Cactus Wrens.

This little beauty of a bird is the largest wren in North America according to www.allaboutbirds.com. It is a true bird of the desert and can survive without freestanding water.

We aren't sure...is this a baby prairie dog?

Happy spring everyone! Until next, take care and...

enjoy!
