Back in the Land of Saguaros

Tucson/Lazydays KOA
Tucson, AZ
February 21, 2015

Since our last post, we have been busy having fun and getting things done. First off, I had my days and dates all mixed up and we didn't check out of San Diego on the 17th as we were suppose to. I had it locked in my mind that the 17th was on a Wednesday...so on Tuesday, the 17th about 1:00 pm, I realized I had made a huge OOPS! It was too late to finish packing and head out so a decision was made to leave early the next morning and go the whole way to Tucson. Thank goodness our site was not reserved!

The Monday before we left we planned to visit Cabrillo NM. I had wanted to play in the tide pools. It was a cool, cloudy day, but that didn't deter us one little bit. It also didn't deter the many other folks with the same agenda. When we arrived at the park, we discovered admission was free as it was Presidents Day. Yikes...there were thousands of people with cameras in hand already exploring the pools and thousands of others looking for a parking place. None to be found and finally the road down to the tide pools was closed. Next visit, we will make this a priority and visit sooner.

Instead of going home totally disappointed, we took the short walk to the historic lighthouse there...something we didn't do 2 years ago. There is also a 2.5 miles walking path to enjoy.

The main reason for a return to Tucson is doctor visits. I am happy to report, Sally is A OK. She had a 3 month blood work up done at Ajo Veterinary Clinic to check her thyroid function. We feel very blessed to have found the best vets all over our country and Ajo is no exception. If you travel with pups and need a vet, we highly recommend Dr. Christensen and her vet tech. Belle also has an appointment for service the first week in March and I need glasses. There are also a couple of DIY projects we want to check off the list before we head north for the spring and summer.

Friday, the 20th, we had a nice surprise. Jim and Mary Ellen and their two Scotties pulled into Lazydays for the week-end on their way to San Diego. It was a busy fun-filled weekend...more on that next time.

On our walk at Cabrillo, a gentleman was very eager to share a find...there were several families around and he repeatedly said, "Anyone want to see an alligator lizard?" I was the only person who responded. How sad is that?

Until next time, take care and...

happy trails!

  1. Wow, gorgeous photos Gay and I just love that little lizard. It is sad that some people don't enjoy what nature gives us. So glad to hear the pups are well and happy. They are our "kids" and we will do almost anything to make sure they are healthy and happy. One time while staying in Kerrville, TX at the Buckhorn Resort for the month of February, I was off a day for our departure. A knock on the door let us know we were suppose to checkout! We got to stay another day in our spot. So we all have done the same thing with dates!! Enjoy Tucson and I hope the weather is great while you are there!

    1. Good morning Sheila. It is so good to hear from you. I am thinking we will be here long enough to see the saguaro in bloom. The desert is quite green now and it rained again yesterday. Hope we can get to some trails soon.

  3. This life does make it very hard to keep dates and days straight. Our new little date book also has messed us up a few times because it starts the week on Monday. Who does that! Glad it all worked out at Mission for you.

Enjoy your stay at Lazydays/KOA:) We just got there in time for some fresh fruit. I finally found an orange tree that no one had picked from yet...Yes!!

Glad to hear Sally id doing well:)

I would have loved to see the alligator lizard. Glad you did too:)

    1. As I have walked around here Pam, I see tables full of fruit. I need to get the fruit picker from the office as all I can find is way to high for me to reach. The trees are beginning to bloom again already.

The alligator lizard was very handsome...

  4. We used to look forward to the Monday holidays, but not anymore! Crowds just aren't our thing.

Can't wait to meet you guys in Moab one day. Not sure we could do all the roads you've done but we'll sure have fun trying.

    1. Hi Gayle...I was disappointed about the tide pools. Hope we have better luck next time. We sure won't go on a holiday, that's for sure!

  7. Yes, you have to get to Cabrillo very early on low tide days to get a parking spot. We tend to go to the end of Sunset Cliffs Blvd. instead, lots of neighborhood parking and just as beautiful!

  8. In all the years coming to the southwest we have yet to make it to the Pacific coast. Liked your photos. That's a pretty fierce looking Alligator Lizard but I for sure would have been one to have wanted to see & photograph it as well. Always good to know where caring Vets are & always good to share that info with the rest of us. Safe travels folks..................................

    1. Oh you and Kelly definitely need to see the Pacific coast at least once. Maybe next time you head to Anza Borrego or Joshua Tree, a side trip would be in order. It is sure something to see Al!

  9. I can't believe people didn't want to see that lizard. Your picture definitely shows where he got his name from. Finding good vets along the way is a challenge and we keep good notes of the ones we like. So glad to hear Sally is doing good. Worry about those fur kids. The saguaros are so beautiful when they bloom. Since Jim has to have his cancer scan done in May we are always around to see them.

    1. We should be here till the middle of April, if all goes well and we get a good report Sandie. The desert sure is green right now so I am wondering if the saguaro will bloom earlier...
Sally sure is loving life these days...so playful and engaging. That makes us so happy!

    1. You betcha...I got a really close up of his leg and foot...and of his back. He was quite a handsome lizard. I think I have always been curious about nature, and it is so sad that children and parents just walk on by without any curiosity at all....

  11. Great sceneries, great photography! No wonder you are enjoying your time.
In the mix up department I had that moment, trying to check in to a flight that we were booked the following day. At least it happened while we were in my city in the Philippines. We ended up booking a hotel :(
I would love to see that lizard, any kind of lizard!
