Cool Summer Nights

Corona de Tucson

June 30, 2025

A sunset walk for Lucy.

Just after our last post, Joe and I celebrated our 42nd Anniversary.  It is another reason why we love June.  We enjoyed a very nice and very tasty lunch at Vivace Restaurant.

Since 1993, this icon located in the Catalina Foothills has been popular for serving Northern Italian Cuisine with the "highest quality of ingredients".  I never realized there was a big difference between northern and southern cuisine in Italy.  One of the key ingredients in the north is butter, not  olive oil which is used in the southern cuisine.  Another big difference is cheese stuffed pasta which is prominent in the north.

I indulged in the best cheese manicotti with meat sauce that I have ever had and a green salad with the best vinaigrette and croutons.

And for dessert, I had creme brulee and Joe had tiramisu...both melt in your mouth yummy!

It's been a few years since we visited the Desert Museum.  During the months of June thru August, the museum hosts Cool Summer Nights from 6:00 to 10:00 pm.

We made it a date night and had a nice walk at sunset and dinner at the Ocotillo Cafe.  There have been wonderful changes made at the museum since our last visit in July '22. Lots of sitting patios and water features, gardens, and more paved walks wandering here and there have been added.

We arrived about 6:30 and enjoyed a leisurely walk with a nice summer breeze.

"Glass in Flight" is on display throughout the grounds with twenty one giant steel and stained glass sculptures by Alex Heveri, a Tucson native.

Our community park is just over a mile from our home.  It's a nice park with a huge grassy area in the center and a path all the way around.  There are grills and  covered picnic area, basketball court, and a nice play area with slides and swings on one side of the park with parking.  Sure makes for a nice early morning walk...about 2.5 miles round trip for us.

Nose to the ground and cool grass makes for one happy puppy!

A few mornings, we had early morning appointments and took our walks in the late afternoon.  I like that time of day too.  A nice summer breeze cools the air and makes for a pleasant time.

The late afternoon glow

The street goes over two big washes that make for nice photos.

Back at the oasis, we had a rather exciting morning.  We had a family of  Horned Lizards making their way from our yard to the other side of the iron fence.

What a great camoflouge these little creatures have.  I didn't see all three until they had made their way up and over the fence. By that time, they were in the shade of a bush.

Another morning we watched a Turkey Vulture in the palm tree.  These huge long lived birds live up to 23 years.  Their keen sense of smell and a heightened ability to see color  enables them to see a dead animal below a forest canopy.

Oranges are a big hit in the yard.

The petunias are blooming and don't seem to mind the hot afternoons.

The Cana Lillies are blooming and do not like the hot afternoons.

Lucy turned 10 months old and weighs in at 18.2 pounds.

She loves ice cubes in her water bowl,

hides under the bed with my bedroom shoes,

and does not like for the birds to be on the patio !

I think that is a wrap.  I know I say it over and over, but I can't believe another month is in the memory book as we head into July and the second half of the year.

Until next time...

Happy July 4th!

Happy Trails !

  1. Lovely post Gay--it made me smile as I drank my morning coffee. I sometimes wish we had landed in Tucson after selling our Pearce home--so much to do and see there--I love the Desert Museum. I think I've eaten at Vivace with Louanne. Your "walk" photos are gorgeous! Lucy now outweighs Kayce--she is at 17.6 now. That bedroom slipper photo is adorable. Green grass and nose to the ground does make for happy puppies! Happy July 4th Gay and Joe!

    1. Good morning Janna and thank you! I sure wish you, Michael and Kaycee were closer, but totally get how beautiful Montana is in the summer. There are not many places to call home with perfect weather for all four seasons…only San Diego comes to mind. It is better for us to deal with the heat and not the cold and snow. We were pleasantly surprised to find such nice additions at the museum and the Ocotillo Cafe was a very nice surprise. Lucy loves games…hiding under the bed or under the kitchen table with “things” she isn’t supposed to have is her favorite thing to do. Have a great week!

  2. It's been so much hotter this June so I'm delighted to see someone(s) enjoying any part of the day. Your photos are gorgeous. Those anniversary (happy!) meals look amazing. Wish I was just a tad closer to Tucson for late afternoon/evening events. I try to avoid "dodge the deer" driving here at night in the summer. Tessa misses grass so much! Growing up I played with horned toads all the time, they were always around. Now they're a treat, and seeing a family is really rare! Thanks for sharing, they're so cool.

    1. Good morning Jodee and thank you! It has been so hot with no relief in sight this week…I did see rain in the forecast and have my fingers crossed! This time of year, it’s early to bed and early to rise and a nice nap mid day. I wish there was a section at the park with a fence so we could let Lucy off leash. I’m hoping as she gets older we can trust here to come and not chase the bunnies, chipmunks, and birds…she just isn’t there yet. It was a real treat to see the horned lizards…which I always called horny toads for some reason…and very sweet to see them “giving there all” to get over the fence. Totally agree…they are so cool! I had never seen an immature one before. Have a great week!

  3. First of all, Happy belated Anniversary!
Vivace is one of Dave's favorite spots for Ciopinno (or, I think Vivace calls it Fish Soup) We always make a stop there when we're in the Tucson area.
I've never seen a Rufous Hummingbird, thanks for the great picture. Yesterday, while Dave was using the binoculars to spy on a group of white Pelicans on the Pend Oreille River, a hummer was busily working the patterns on his shirt! He never saw it and I didn't get my phone out fast enough to take a picture. Too funny!
I love the photo of Lucy's curls, and the picture of "the bad girl" in the slipper was so cute....

    1. Good morning Sue and thank you. The years sure roll be fast don’t they? Next time you are in Tucson, we will definitely have to meet up at Vivace. We have seen a Rufous several times at our feeder making its way either north or south during migration. They are quite showy! I am often having the same experience with “not getting the camera fast enough”…that would have been a great photo! Although, the hummer on Lewis’ nose will always take the cake! Lucy is sure growing up fast…and a bundle of energy! I love her curls too and they are so soft!
