Yes it is May and not only that, May is half over. I still can't figure out where the times goes. It is more of the same here and not much to say. We had our annual bloodwork done and a visit to see our General Practitioner. He says we are healthy. YIPPEE!
We did meet Jamie and Andra for an early dinner on Saturday before Mother's Day.
We tried a new to us Italian cafe in downtown Tucson. It was featured in an old issue of Arizona Highways. CERES Italian Cafe opened in 2019 as Tucson's first fresh pasta cafe. Owner and chef, Carolyn O'Conner, who is from New York where fresh pasta is a "way of life", missed the small cafes that sold fresh noodles to pick up and take home to cook. Today her sunny little cafe is nestled in an alley in one of my favorite places to visit in Tucson...the Historic Presidio District. It is open from 5:00 - 9:00 pm for take home or to enjoy under one of the picnic umbrellas that line the alley. Carolyn's love for fresh pasta began in Syracuse, but her skills in making pasta began in Tucson when a friend from Parma in Northern Italy shared his skill with her. "The egg noodles are special because...they are just a little more decadent", she said. "They are made with imported Italian flour called tipo 00, and the 00 just means that it is milled super fine. It creates this silky noodle that has chewiness, but is smooth and silky. Those are the most unique for people who have never had fresh pasta before." The name Ceres comes form the Roman goddess of wheat and agriculture.

I haven't finished, but we are pleased so far. It was not so easy measuring and hanging these photos and Joe did a great job. Five pairs with each displaying a landscape (horizontal frame) and close up (vertical frame) photo of a place we love. The Crested Butte pair is a field of green with a background of Halsey Basin in the Elk Mountains and the white wildflowers were at the summit of Mt. Crested Butte...both hikes I remember as if they were taken yesterday. Now it's nice to walk by the room and see something pretty and memorable.
Last week, the weather made a dramatic change from the highs in the mid 80s and lows in the mid 50s the first week of May to HOT! It's that time of year when we don't know if spring is gone for good, but next week looks promising that it might be hanging around a little longer.

Back at the oasis, the Orioles have arrived.
We found Gamble's Quail eggs when we were cleaning up on the side of the house last week. There were 12 eggs and I'm sad to say they are still there.
I repotted my 10 year old jade plant.
The torch cacti bloomed again.
One of the local inhabitants came to visit...a Desert Spiny Lizard.

| The male Spiny Lizard has the black wedge mark on the side of his neck and blue markings on his throat. He can reach up to 13 inches long. |

| They mostly feast on insects, but will eat fruit and other vegetation. |
Spiny Lizards are closely related to Horned Lizards. They live in arid environments across the southwestern U.S. and are not poisonous to humans and pets.
We see a lot of immature birds this time of year...

Lucy's bubbly outlook brings us so much fun.
A sunset wraps up the first half of May.
Until next time,
HAPPY TRAILS!

Even when there's nothing going on you manage to write blogs I so enjoy reading! And you find the best places--those Arizona Highways magazines are a treasure! What an interesting/delicious sounding restaurant--Italian is my favorite! Your torch cactus is lovely as is the new gallery in your hobby room! Pups bring us such joy! Have a great week you three!
ReplyDeleteGood morning Janna. Thank you! I’m really on the fence about blogging. And often say to myself, “this is the last post”, but every two weeks seems to be a nice compromise these days. I love Arizona Highways! It’s been around for a very long time…first published in April, 1925. Most of my favorite places we have visited in AZ since we bought our home were featured.
DeleteHave you ever had or made fresh pasta? I love pasta dishes and I can’t believe I have never in 75 years tasted such yummy pasta as we had there. The sauce is delicious too!
The torch cacti have been especially pretty this year. I begin at the end of March and fertilize them once a month thru September. I have potted more and more cacti and succulents the past couple of years as they are so easy to maintain in the summer. But I do have to have some annuals/color too. I have always enjoyed plants…
I have some more photos to pick…Utah (Moab), Montana (Glacier NP), Texas (Galveston), South Dakota ( Custer SP) are at the top of the list!
Hope you, Michael and Kaycee have a week too. They sure fly by don’t they?
That dessert looks delicious! I am surprised that something has not eaten those eggs. Would a lizard eat them? I know plenty of other critters that would. It will not be long until you have baby quail running around!
ReplyDeleteGood morning guys! The quail eggs are still there as of this morning. I am pretty sure they are “duds”. We haven’t seen any activity from the pair that laid them so I figure they just left them and moved on. We are also surprised nothing has eaten them and we don’t really know what we should do…I guess throw them away. What do you think? Or do you think there is still hope for babies? The banana/ chocolate swirl was very yummy! So was the pasta and sauce!
DeleteI really like your photo gallery arrangement and the memories each picture evokes.
ReplyDeleteMmmm, fresh pasta! Thanks for putting another restaurant on our "list" for next time. I think we'll be in Tucson on our way home in the fall.
Our nest of 16+ eggs gradually dwindled down to none. Either they hatched and we have more cute quail babies in the world, or they gave sustenance to a creature that needed it. Who knows....
I'm with Janna, I love to read these sweet, everyday life blogs (and the exciting ones too!) from you and our other friends. They reinforce all our choices and it's wonderful to be able to stay in touch and in contact with friends from afar.
Hi Sue. Thank you! I sure hope you make a stop here! It is always fun to visit with you and Dave. I hope you will have a couple of days to add us to the calendar.
DeleteI fell the same about the blogs and staying in touch with friends. And I like the way you said “sweet everyday day life” blogs are just as important as the exciting ones.
All 12 of the quail eggs are still in the side yard. No sign of a mom incubating them.
I can't believe I've walked past Ceres so many times and never paid attention! Since I love Italian I must make that our next foodie stop. How fun to see the beginnings of another beautiful mural. They are such a wonderful part of Tucson. Using our travel photos in our home decor is a favorite - and yes it is nearly impossible to choose from all the amazing experiences over the years. A blessed problem to have :-) We definitely haven't had the bird babies this year that we're used to, so I hope that changes soon.
ReplyDeleteHi Jodee…I never paid attention either and am so happy I happened across the featured article about Ceres Cafe in Arizona Highways. The noodles are like none I have ever tasted…so light and yummy! And the frozen swirl of deliciousness is a must have! Those of us who have spent years in a MH traveling the country have been blessed to have all the wonderful memories. If I could send some baby birds your way, I would. They are very hungry!
DeleteBeautiful photos and lovely art. Thank you for sharing, and warm greetings from a retired lady living in Montreal, Canada ❤️ 😊 🇨🇦
ReplyDeleteI appreciate you stopping by Linda. Thank you!
