Willis Creek Canyon

Cannonville/Bryce Canyon KOA
Cannonville, UT
September 4, 2016

With it being a holiday week-end Joe and I thought we should try a hike outside the national park.  Without discussion,  Willis Creek was the choice.

It's a 4.8 mile in/out hike about 9 miles from the RV park here in Cannonville.  We did this hike in May 2013 with Dover and Wrecks.

They had a blast running through the slot canyons and playing in the stream.

It's a quick and easy descent into the narrows located in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

The beautiful striated rocks that form the canyon walls and the pebble stream bed path make for a pleasant hike.

After the first slot, the narrows open up...

...and then close in again making the second slot.  It is not as narrow as the first slot, but the walls are stunning.

There is one more widening of the walls...

and then they close in for the third time forming the most narrow slot with the tallest walls.

From here, the wide creek bed takes you to the confluence of Willis Creek and Sheep Creek.

When you reach the end, turn right and climb a small hill to see some petroglyphs.

It was an emotional day for Joe and I...such fond memories of our sweet Wrecks...as well as peaceful and beautiful.

Until next time, happy trails !

    1. It's a great short hike Mark. It can be extended if you want to hike down Sheep Creek a ways.

  7. Gorgeous hike! Love the colors and "elephant toes." How sweet to have such a fond memory of Wreck's having fun:) We went down to do this hike, only to find out that the road was closed and there was way too much water for hiking. Oh, well, one of these times we'll be there at the right time. We've tried three times and from both directions to get to the Grosvenor Arch, also. I guess fall is the time for our next visit:)

    1. There is always next time and something new to look froward to Pam...this RV life is perfect for that. We did see Grosvenor Arch when we were here last time. If we have time we might take that ride again as I remember it being pretty. Hope things are going great in Pennsylvania...

  9. Your photos brought back great memories for me when we hiked the Willis Slot Canyon years ago with our original Bayfield Bunch Max, Checkers, and Cora. And your mention of Grosvenor's Arch put a smile on my face as well. I've hiked up to the top of that Arch twice. If your back that way and facing the Arch take the trail to the right around behind and you will find a reasonably easy climb up to the top. All the best to you folks...........

    1. Thanks for the tip Al. Willis Creek is one of my all time favorites because we had the pleasure of spending the day with Wrecks and Dover. The memories are sure special ones aren't they?

  10. The striated rock is beautiful. I noticed the ground water & couldn't help but wonder, is there a park number you call beforehand so as to avoid flash floods? This may be a dumb question but having never been there myself, I do wonder.

    1. Hey Gayle, The Visitor Center right around the corner from the RV Park has all that information. We certainly wouldn't hike a slot if there was any chance of rain in the forecast. There was more water this year than 3 years ago...so glad our boots are water-proof !

    2. Got 'cha! ALWAYS check with the visitor center before venturing out to hike a slot. Thanks,
